The Bbl sets an absolute minimum \u2014 but the actual classification required for a given door depends on the building&#8217;s use, occupancy, fire load, and the conclusions of the fire safety engineering study. What the Bbl defines is the floor below which no project may fall; what a specific project actually requires can only be established through calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, the process works as follows. The fire safety engineer calculates the fire load and evacuation scenario for each compartment. Based on those calculations, the engineer specifies the minimum fire resistance classification required for every element in the compartment boundary, including doors. The architect then uses those specifications to select a certified product that meets or exceeds the required classification.
